  4. Canadian Art Schools – The Stars Align for Tonella Roy

Fredericton Audio Engineering instructor Tonella Roy has taken her classroom on the road – all the way to New York City. The instructor at the Centre for Arts and Technology was selected to demo new production gear during the 135th International AES Convention, the largest gathering of audio professionals in the world. Roy ran a series of guerrilla stunts on busy NYC streets outside convention venues, showcasing her powerhouse vocals and technical chops while demoing a new product from Calgary-based sound engineering firm Kaotica.

The AES convention took place Oct. 17-20 in the Big Apple, overlapping with the 2013 CMJ Music Marathon, one of the world’s most influential festivals for discovering new talent. As it happens, Roy was already attending the music marathon on behalf of her band – Tonella; to schmooze around networking events with Moncton-based agent Sarah Nesbitt.  Nesbitt also works with Kaotica, and when the company caught wind of Roy’s pipes and skills behind a sound panel (having engineered her band’s songs), they scooped her up to showcase their new product, the Kaotica Eyeball – a cutting edge mic filter.
