This is a technical course in the use of software common to the professional , business, and academic worlds. Students receive an introduction to various technologies used on campus including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets. Building on a foundational understanding of Windows or MAC, students learn the basic skills to successfully navigate campus tools, as well as using standard office productivity software.
Career Management (CM)
CM is about helping students define their career goals and direction upon graduation, creating a feasible action plan, and building confidence for moving into the workforce. The course provides students with tools and guidance to successfully navigate the business world for short and long term success and avoiding common pitfalls.
Design Applications of Art Movements (DAAM)
This course is designed to inspire students and help apply Adobe Photoshop and other manipulation programs to create designs inspired from key movements. Typical industries in which these skills may be applied include advertising, marketing, graphic design, and publishing.
Design Studio 1 (DS 1)
This course begins with a study of concepts and skills in commercial art and graphic design using industry-standard illustration, digital publishing, and image editing applications. In today’s world, products need an edge to differentiate themselves from other products. This is done through brand identity. Students will learn all aspects of creating a brand experience from concept to application.
Design Studio 2 (DS 2)
From colour to effective typography, this level two design course strengthens your graphic design skills and mastery of image creation and editing software. Creating strong visual layouts such as posters, brochures and magazines, are just some of the challenges you’ll meet along the way. Using Photoshop and Illustrator, students will learn how to import graphic files into InDesign, industry’s leading-edge layout software.
Design Studio 3 (DS 3)
This course is designed to help students apply Adobe Photoshop to situations that may occur throughout their career. Typical industries in which these skills may be applied include advertising, marketing, graphic design, and publishing. Using primarily Adobe Photoshop, students will develop intermediate level skills in photo manipulation and restoration.
Design Studio 4 (DS 4)
Moving from the basics into intermediate level design topics in typography, design for film, theatre and television, PDF file architecture, automated graphic templates, and select topics in colour correction, image compositing and 3D illustration maps out the main thrust of this course.
Design Studio 5 (DS 5)
Understanding the theory behind and the creation of design elements is only part of the design process. Being able to combine design knowledge and skills into a proper workflow is the key to success. This course will show students how to communicate design progress and output a final design for various printing methods.
Digital Illustration (DILL)
The course concentrates on developing expertise in producing line and black-and –white art with emphasis on design and creation of art for reproduction. Discussions and projects covering the major markets for illustration including editorial, sports, caricature, medical, product , and concept art..
GDD Employability Skills 1 (GDD ES 1)
This course is designed to give the digital media artist the capability of producing basic 3D models and animation for use in websites and interactive applications.
GDD Employability Skills 2 (GDD ES 2)
In today’s marketplace technical skills and talent are not sufficient to find and keep high quality jobs. Employers desire candidates with a high level of employability skills that include personal management, communication, problem solving, positive attitudes and behaviors, adaptability, and teamwork skills. Employability Skills II provides a space to explore the realities of the work world through a variety of real world case studies, breadth and depth training opportunities, and/or work/production projects where employability skills (covered in the Professional Development Program – PDP – series of courses) can be practiced. Each term the faculty will determine an appropriate focus for the courses that best serves the needs of the student cohorts or individual students, and local industry. Potential topics include specialized local industry needs such as industry overviews, guest speakers, case studies, or projects; interdisciplinary breadth and depth courses, or special or advanced technical skills, assigned per class or per individual need; class or individual development assignments, and projects based on class or individual needs (as determined by the instructor or dept head or industry mentor); and work experience or simulated work experience projects and group projects.
Foundation of Art and Design (FAD)
Foundation of Art and Design explores the evolution of imagery from primitive art through to today’s digital creations, with a focus on 20th century North American and European art and the elemental themes in design, composition, and content. Developing the oral and written skills with which to discuss or critique works of art, FAD enables students to understand the artistic direction demanded by future clients.
Interface Design (ID)
Interface Design is a hot topic in technology these days – whether designing a website, game, application, or product. The purpose of this course is to explore and understand the interactions between humans and interfaces, and then to apply that knowledge by updating existing interfaces and designing completely new ones. By the end of the course, students will understand how to make interfaces that are as simple, straightforward, and efficient as possible.
Internet Marketing (IM)
Fundamentals of traditional marketing concepts are discussed and applied to practical exercises and case studies that focus on Internet marketing tactics. This course discusses many topics such as marketing mix, strategic planning, market characteristics, marketing research techniques, market segmentation, target market selection, economics, and business and international marketing.
Internet Publishing (IPUB)
Using Adobe Dreamweaver, students will be able to create basic web pages and integrate introductory level Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) with HTML.
Introduction to Computer Graphics (ICG)
This introductory foundation course provides a solid background in vector and bitmap graphics creation, graphic file management, scanning and format conversion necessary for every field of computer graphics.
Introduction to Digital Video (IDV)
IDV is an introduction to the basic concepts of non-linear editing. Using Digital Video and Adobe Premiere, students will learn the fundamentals of editing and composing techniques using the following elements; effects, transitions and titles. The course topics will include: Capturing and importing of media, project and file management.
Introduction to Motion Graphics (IMG)
Once regarded as a cheaper alternative to film, digital video now rivals films for producing high quality productions at reduced costs. Introduction to Motion Graphics (IMG) introduces students to digital video production, non-linear editing, compositing and visual effects, using affordable desktop technology. Topics include basic computer graphic manipulation, titling and visual effects techniques, digitizing video and editing in a non-linear video environment. IMG will build on the fundamentals of video editing taught in IDV in a fusion of cross platform applications designed to meet the exacting standards of today’s creative market employers.
Introduction to Video Production (IVP)
This course introduces students to the world of video production. Students will attain the basic knowledge of camera handling, shot selection, lighting setups, grip gear, depth of field, sound recording, simple editing, moving the camera, scriptwriting, and more. Students will use their skills to write, shoot, and edit together their very own short film.
Life Drawing 1 (LD 1)
Students will focus on areas such as proportion, anatomy, light and shadow while improving drawing speed, accuracy, expressiveness and technical ability. This is necessary to properly understand and artistically represent the human form.
Media Communications & Law (MCL)
Digital media and emerging communication media are blurring many well established boundaries. This course explores the legal ramifications and how key elements are affected such as intellectual property, rights of privacy and publicity, defamation, third party liabilities, domain names, e-commerce, and issues of contract law and digital production.
Graphic & Digital Design Portfolio Production Workshop (GDDPPW)
This course is a practical guide for digital media students who want to present their work to potential clients. Students will learn how to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses as a designer, selecting works that best highlights their talents. The course also focuses on the process for developing a portfolio site to showcase your design work.
Principles of Photography 1 (POP 1)
CAT offers Principal of photography as a foundation course for students in pursuit of a career in the visual arts. This course focuses on creating a clear understanding of how to successfully operate a digital-SLR to allow you to creatively capture an image without hesitation, while being able to see the creative elements that make photographs visually appealing.
Professional Development Program
PD is a specially developed course to help our students navigate college and prepare them for today’s highly competitive job market. It recognizes that employers today are looking for employees who not only have the technical skills but also an understanding of themselves and the ability to interact successfully with others. With CAT programs being accelerated we want to ensure each individual is prepared to enter the job market and to thrive in their place of employment. PD is meant to be practical to each student and what is learned can be directly applied to the real world. PD helps students to foster positive, healthy relationships – both personal and professional. PD encourages students to make connections – in their school, and in their industry. PD gives students the most up-to-date skills to find and secure a job and gives them the knowledge and tools to advance in their career.
Professional Development 1 (PD 1) – Success in College
Success in College is the first module of the Professional Development Program series. It is designed to introduce students to foundational skills and competences necessary to be successful in college. Utilizing a variety of resources students develop the self-awareness necessary for success in the program and career being pursued.
Professional Development 2 (PD 2) – Success in Teams
Success in Teams is the second module of the Professional Development Program. This module focuses on developing interpersonal skills for effective team membership. These competencies are essential to success in college and career. A variety of exercises uncover effective communication strategies to be practiced in a collaborative final project.
Professional Development 3 (PD 3) – Success in Networking
Success in Networking is the third module of the Professional Development Program. This module focuses on developing and practicing networking skills and competencies essential to success in college and career. A variety of activities start the process of presenting oneself within a chosen industry and building a professional network. An informational interview with someone in the field provides insights and ideas for launching a career.
Professional Development 4 (PD 4) – Success in Career
PD 4 helps to prepare students to embark on their career. Taken in the last quarter of study, students have the opportunity to create a professional job application. Activities include participation in a formal panel interview, and the preparation and presentation of a personal-professional introduction.
Vector Animation Production 1 (VAP 1)
Increasingly, vector-based animation is making its way beyond the web and showing up everywhere from television ads to theatrical films and video. This course gives the student grounding in the fundamentals of Flash interactivity and animation. Students also learn some scripting basics to control everything from file loading to simple user interactions.
