Atlantic Fashion Week Celebrates Newcomers, Favourites Alike

Last year, Mitchell Gilroy worked backstage at Atlantic Fashion Week and dreamed of being part of the runway excitement.
This year, the dream comes true as the 20-year-old student in the fashion design and merchandising program at the Centre for Arts and Technology in Halifax is one of eight new talents featured in the New and Emerging Designers showcase on Thursday at 9 p.m. in the Harbourview Lounge at Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax.
Gilroy, a Musquodoboit Harbour native who will graduate at the end of September, wore one of his own designs to the Atlantic Fashion Week launch Monday at the casino.
The long black zip jacket, with hood, long black sleeves and grey jersey insets, is a unisex design and features a slit running up to the shoulder blades so it flows like a cape. It is one of seven designs — both menswear and womenswear — that Gilroy will show on Thursday, and it’s his favourite piece.
“It’s a very graphic collection,” he says. “Everything is dark blue and lighter blue and white with sharp shapes, clean lines. My work has been described as consistently architectural with a focus on form.”
