Fashion Photography Training: How To Use Alternative Light Modifiers to Create Unique Photo Effects (Part 3 of 3)

News

This past June, our Kelowna Digital Photography students took part in an incredible fashion photography shoot with Kevin Trowbridge, creating their own visual masterpieces. Kevin is the department head for Digital Photography at our Kelowna campus, and organized the shoot which was part of the Lighting for Stills 200 course which students take in their third quarter of the program. We recently posted about the shoot including a video featuring an inside look at the shoot from one of the students participating, Emily Cook. You can also check out all the final images from the shoots in part one of the series, Fashion Photography Training: Lighting (Part 1 of 3).

During the shoot, the students were asked to challenge the use of an alternate light source. Usually, photographers will light a portrait with a softbox, umbrella, or occasionally, hard light. Today, we are looking at how to light a scene with alternative light modifiers, such as a gobo modifiers, often used in the film industry) to obscure light, create a pattern, and also colour modifiers, like fabrics, to act like a gel when used with your speedlight or another light.
