Grad Spotlight: Nick Desert, Interior Designer

News

After graduating from the Interior Design program at age 20, Nick worked on a number of projects as Lead Designer, including both residential and commercial spaces. He now works as an Interior Designer at Kelowna-based Begrand Fast Design.

Nick attributes getting his first job to his practicum during the program. “I just kept coming into the office long after the practicum was up and by the time they realized it, I was pretty much a part of the team.”

We recently asked Nick – who conducted a Google SketchUp workshop at our Kelowna campus – what advice he would give to anyone considering the Interior Design program.

He explained that “the program is not about picking colours and fabrics. It does prepare you perfectly for the work force, in some ways it will be more challenging than what you will experience post graduation, but that is a good thing. This is a serious design program with both technical and creative aspects that will push you in ways that you’ve never imagined. If you want to be a designer you really need to be self-driven and willing to sacrifice blood, sweat, and tears to make it in the industry.”

He adds that it is however, all worth it in the end. “I like the variety of the projects I get to work on as an Interior Design and the challenges they provide. Every day is new and exciting and I am still learning.”
