We like to think our Instructors are a pretty cool bunch, but we love when we get the chance to prove it! Recently, one of primary Digital Photography Instructors, Grant Robinson attended Crankworx Whistler, as an avid “all things MTB” professional photographer and participated in a truly unique photo challenge at this internationally acclaimed MTB event – Deep Summer Photo Challenge.
Grant was one of six hand selected elite mountain bike photographers invited to take the three days provided and capture the true essence of Whistler and the people that flock to this late Summer event. From Seb Kemp, Deep Summer Organizer – “This year the emphasis has been on breaking the mould and making photographers push themselves to get under the veil and present the true story of Whistler. We’ve selected some truly expressive and artistic shooters to come to Whistler and interpret what a thousand people have done before them… The photographers will have to really think hard about how they express themselves and challenge their capabilities.”
Grant is already well-known in the mountain biking community and has worked with clients such as NIKE, Loreal, The Ride Journal and DIRT in the development of his impressive portfolio. The opportunity presented by the Deep Summer Challenge was a great way for Grant to stretch his photo creativity and reconnect with a community of people close to his heart.
Grant’s submission, titled “Ride for Your Life” was shown to crowds en masse at Whistler Olympic Plaza and during the event and can be seen on Crankworx page online. If Grant’s unique submission wasn’t enough to impress you…one of our Digital Filmmaking Alumni; Matt Butterworth, acted as Grant’s main video editor on the finished piece. Grant prepared the storyboards and offered the creative direction for the project and shot all the images. Matt Butterworth worked in tandem with Grant on the editing and the results show their combined artistic impact. We love when our Alumni go on to find success, but even more so when it is in collaboration with current instructors! The combination of Grant’s keen eye for unique perspectives, his gritty aesthetic and Matt’s editing prowess made for one impressive piece of visual art.
Congratulations to both Grant and Matt on their cooperative achievement at Whistler Crankworx 2015. To see Grant and Matt’s submission, as well as the other photo slideshows visit Crankworx.com
And even though this blog post is about Grant, we would be remiss in saying that he is alone in his collection of industry accolades; many of our Instructors have and will continue to do amazing things in their fields. We simply cannot share all of our good news stories all at once, so you will have to check back to find out what our other instructors are up to…we promise you won’t be disappointed.
